Aurora tonight in Rovaniemi

Unlikely tonight — dark from 20:32 and the sky is clear, but the field is quiet (Kp 0.00).

Checked against NOAA SWPC and FMI.

Tonight's evidence for Rovaniemi: activity, cloud, darkness and the moon.

A December trip to Rovaniemi gives you a short window of low daylight centred on early afternoon, followed by roughly thirteen hours dark enough for the northern lights. That split decides your schedule: daylight belongs to outdoor photographs and Santa Claus Village, while the long evening is for aurora hunting. Here is how the light, cold, transport, and queues work in practice.

How much daylight December has, and why Rovaniemi has no polar night

On 1 December the sun rises at 10:17 and sets at 13:58 in Rovaniemi, giving 3h 42m of daylight, and it is dark enough for the aurora for 12h 42m. On the winter solstice, 21 December, the sun rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22, which leaves 2h 14m of daylight and 13h 10m dark enough for the aurora. By 1 January daylight increases to 2h 46m, with sunrise at 10:56 and sunset at 13:43, alongside 13h 00m dark enough for the aurora. These daylight figures use Rovaniemi local time. You can check the complete daylight table for Rovaniemi for daily figures.

Rovaniemi is situated on the Arctic Circle, yet atmospheric refraction ensures it experiences no polar night (kaamos, the period when the sun does not rise above the horizon) in December; the sun clears the horizon even on the shortest day. In these figures, "dark enough for the aurora" means the sun has dipped more than 18° below the horizon.

How cold December gets

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the December mean temperature at Rovaniemi airport was -7.7 °C for the period 1991-2020. More recently, the airport recorded an average of -7.4 °C in December 2024 and -6.3 °C in December 2025.

In Lapland winter usually begins in mid-October, and throughout winter the mean temperature remains below 0 °C. December is not the coldest month of the season; the coldest day of the winter usually arrives well after the winter solstice, towards the end of January. The lowest winter temperatures recorded in Lapland and eastern Finland range from -45 °C to -50 °C. The coldest Christmas night of the 2000s occurred in 2002, when Lapland experienced between 30 and 35 degrees of frost. The lowest Christmas-time temperature recorded in Finland was -43 °C, measured at Sodankylä in Lapland in 1947. Conversely, during the mildest Christmases on record, temperatures in Lapland have climbed to three degrees above freezing.

Snow cover is dependable. By December, permanent snow cover is usually established in Rovaniemi, and winter snow activities typically run from late November or early December until early April. By Christmas, northern Finland typically holds close to 40 cm of snow. At Sodankylä, snow has been recorded on the ground every Christmas Eve since records began, and Finnish Meteorological Institute statistics from 1981-2010 confirm that a white Christmas occurs in Lapland practically every year. If you plan to extend your visit into later months, consult the broader Rovaniemi winter guide.

The village and the Santa Claus Office in December

Santa Claus Village operates daily throughout the year, with no entrance fee to enter the grounds. Each business on the site determines and publishes its own hours.

The Santa Claus Office is open all year and entrance is free. Its opening hours are:

  • Daily 09.00-19.00 from 16 to 29 November 2026
  • Daily 08.00-20.00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027
  • Daily 09.00-18.00 from 4 January to 31 March 2027

Meeting times with Santa cannot be booked in advance; all visitors without special passes wait in turn. During the peak period from late November to early January, the Santa Claus Office advises arriving earlier in the day to ensure you gain entry that same day. Visitors must not use their own cameras during the meeting; an on-site photographer captures photographs and video, which you can purchase afterwards. To bypass the queue, families and groups can buy a Christmas Express Pass on the Santa Claus Office website for a scheduled time slot.

Other facilities keep separate schedules:

  • Santa Claus' Main Post Office opens daily 10.00-19.00 in November, and daily 9.00-20.00 from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027.
  • Arctic Circle Tourist Information in the village is open daily 8:00-19:00 in December.

Individual business hours vary over Christmas. For instance, the Iittala outlet is closed on 24 and 25 December. Mrs. Santa Claus Christmas Cottage operates 10.00-15.00 on 24 December. Christmas House Santa Claus stays open 8.00-22.00 on both 24 and 25 December.

The local Christmas period culminates on 23 December, when Santa departs on his journey around the world; this event is broadcast live, with specific arrangements for 2026 to be confirmed. In the city, Visit Rovaniemi lists a traditional Christmas market arranged by LC Rovaniemi/Napapiiri on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 December 2026, running from 10 to 16 at Santasport Lapland Sports Institute (Hiihtomajantie 2). For broader cultural context around the season, read our overview of Christmas traditions in Finland.

Getting to the village by bus

Santa Claus Village lies 8 km north of Rovaniemi city centre along highway 4 towards Ivalo, and 3 km from Rovaniemi Airport. You can make the trip via public bus or dedicated airport transfers.

Linkkari local bus route 8 runs all year between Rovaniemi railway station, the city centre, and the village. Its full route path is Arctic Circle - Ruokasenkatu - Rantavitikka (University) - Railway Station, terminating directly at the Arctic Circle stop at the village. Both the city centre and Santa Claus Village sit inside Linkkari's zone A, making the journey a standard single-zone fare. Single tickets are purchased directly from the driver using cash or contactless payment, and include transfers within 60 minutes.

Holiday bus timetables alter over the Christmas period:

  • On Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December 2026), Linkkari services run to Saturday timetables, with all route 8 buses operating on the Saturday schedule.
  • On Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026), route 8 runs strictly to the Sunday timetable, and no other Linkkari route runs.

Private services offer alternatives. From November to March, the Santa's Express and Airport Express buses run between the airport, Santa Claus Village, and the city centre. The Airport Express and Santa's Express service also connects Rovaniemi Airport directly to the village and Rovaniemi railway station, selling tickets directly on the vehicle.

What to wear for a Lapland December

Dress in warm layers:

  • Wear long-sleeved and long-legged thermal underwear as your base layer.
  • Add a middle layer of warm wool or fleece beneath your coat.
  • Choose outer clothing made from close-woven fabric to block cold air.
  • On your feet, wear socks followed by woollen socks inside lined, thick-soled boots that leave enough room to wiggle your toes.
  • Protect your head and face with a woollen or insulated hat covering the ears, cheeks, and neck.
  • Cover hands with mittens, or wear over-gloves paired with thin under-gloves.

If you lack heavy sub-zero kit, several activity providers rent winter gear. Available hire items include thermal overalls, insulated footwear, woollen socks, warm hats, balaclavas, mittens, and scarves.

Northern lights in December, and the aurora alert

In Rovaniemi the northern lights season lasts from late August until early April. Auroral displays occur across the Arctic Circle during quiet geomagnetic periods; solar activity itself is rarely the limiting factor.

The main barrier in early winter is cloud. Finnish Meteorological Institute records show that autumn and winter skies over Finland average 65% to 85% cloud cover, with clear days least frequent during November and December. The best hours to see auroras are between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. local time. The best months, on FMI's figures, are February-March and September-October, so December is not one of them. On FMI's statistics, every second night is an auroral night at Sodankylä, and in northern Lapland three nights out of four have northern lights if the sky is clear enough.

Rather than waiting outside on overcast nights, check the local Rovaniemi aurora forecast. You can activate the Rovaniemi aurora notification, which alerts you only when conditions in Rovaniemi are dark, sufficiently clear of cloud, and geomagnetically active. It triggers at most once per night without requiring an account or email address.
