Finland is dear for a traveller in three places: a bed, a restaurant dinner and a drink. It is fair to cheap for everything else: public transport, lunch, supermarket food, and most of what is best to do, which is free. A day in Helsinki can cost €65 or €300, and the difference is almost all the hotel and the evening.
Every price on this page was read on 28 September 2026 from the operator's own website or booking engine, for the dates named. Dollar and pound figures use the European Central Bank rate of that day: €1 = $1.14 = £0.86. If you are moving here rather than visiting, rent and salaries are a different calculation, and they are in the cost of living in Finland.
A bed for the night
Hotel prices in Finland are set by demand, night by night, and the operators publish them openly. These are what their own booking pages quoted, not what an aggregator estimated.
Helsinki:
| Where | What | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel Suomenlinna | a bed in an 8-bed dorm, linen included, Wed 14 Oct 2026 | €28 |
| Omena Hotel Yrjönkatu | a room for one adult, October 2026 | €68–101, typically €79 |
| Omena Hotel Yrjönkatu | December 2026 / January 2027 | €66–100 / €65–93 |
| Omena Hotel Yrjönkatu | June to August 2027 | €69–133; August typically €106 |
| Scandic Grand Central | a double for two, Wed 14 Oct 2026 | €145 |
Helsinki's hotels fill with business travel, not tourists, so the city does not have the steep summer peak you might expect. Scandic's own calendar showed nights in July 2027 from €89 to €153 at member prices, against €101 to €228 in October 2026. Midweek autumn nights around conferences are often the dearest of the year.
Rovaniemi is the opposite. It has one season that decides everything, and the same room changes price by a factor of four:
| Hotel | 14 Oct 2026 | 16 Dec 2026 | 17 Feb 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa's Hotel Rudolf, economy twin | €80 | no rooms for two | – |
| Scandic Rovaniemi City, double | €85 | no room types available | €389 |
| Santa's Hotel Santa Claus, standard double | €124 | €465 | – |
Mid-December was already sold out at two of the three hotels in late September. If Lapland at Christmas is the plan, book when you book the flight. The Rovaniemi in winter guide explains why October and March give you the same aurora for a fraction of the price.
Eating
Lunch is the cheap meal. Finland eats its hot meal at midday, and the weekday lounas buffet is the best-value food in the country. At Factory's lunch restaurants €13.70 buys a salad bar, soup, a choice of three hot dishes, bread, dessert and coffee, on weekdays from 10:30 to 14:00. That is typical of the whole country. Cheaper still, the UniCafe university restaurants in Helsinki sell lunch to anyone at a normal price of €9.80 for a main dish, salad, bread and a drink.
Dinner is where it gets expensive. At Sea Horse, a Helsinki institution for Finnish food, fried Baltic herring with mash is €23, meatballs with lingonberries €24 and a Wiener schnitzel €29; a bowl of salmon soup is €16 as a starter. A local lager is €7.20. Two courses and a beer come to about €47 a head, and that is a traditional restaurant, not a fine-dining one. What to order is in the Finnish food guide.
The supermarket is where a budget trip survives. From the S group's online shop on 28 September 2026:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Rye bread, Reissumies, 705 g | €1.99 |
| Rice pies (riisipiirakka), 6 | €2.29 |
| Lapin Kulta beer 5.2%, 0.5 l | €3.19 |
| Lapin Kulta beer 5.2%, 6 × 0.33 l | €11.10 |
Supermarkets sell beer, cider and light wine drinks. Wine and spirits come from the state retailer Alko, where a half-litre of Jaloviina, the Finnish cut brandy, is €21.38. Alcohol is the one thing that is expensive everywhere in Finland, in every shop and every bar.
Getting around
Public transport is good value, and a day ticket makes it a flat rate.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Helsinki single, zones AB, in the HSL app / contactless | €3.30 / €3.50 |
| Helsinki day ticket, zones AB | €10.60, then €5.30 a day |
| Helsinki day ticket, zones ABC (includes the airport) | €12.80, then €6.40 a day |
| Rovaniemi local bus single, zone A, contactless or cash | €3.60 |
| Rovaniemi day ticket, zone A (contactless price cap) | €9 |
Helsinki prices are from HSL's 2026 price list; Rovaniemi's are Linkkari's fares from 7 January 2026. Santa Claus Village is inside Rovaniemi's zone A, so it is a single fare from the centre. The airport run is covered in Helsinki Airport to the city.
Long-distance trains are priced by demand, like the hotels, and are cheapest booked early.
What things cost to do
| Activity | Price |
|---|---|
| Ateneum or Kiasma, adult | €23 at the door, €21 online |
| Helsinki Card, 24 / 48 / 72 hours, digital | €51 / €62 / €73 |
| Löyly public sauna, 2 hours, towel included | €29 |
| Allas Sea Pool, pools and saunas, weekday / weekend | €19 / €24 |
| Husky ride with a musher, Rovaniemi, 2 h 15 min | €164; €169 from 30 Nov to 10 Jan |
| Reindeer sleigh ride, 5–7 minutes, Santa Claus Village | €30; €40 from 1 Dec to 10 Jan |
Whether the Helsinki Card pays for itself is a sum, and it is done in the Helsinki Card guide. Where to take a sauna, from the free one up, is in the Finnish sauna guide. The Lapland prices, including which safaris are worth the money, are in dog sledding and reindeer in Lapland.
What is free
More than you would guess:
- Suomenlinna. The sea fortress is free to walk around, and the ferry is on the ordinary HSL ticket.
- Helsinki City Museum is always free, and every big art museum is free for under-18s.
- Oodi, the central library opposite Parliament, which anyone can walk into and spend a wet afternoon in.
- Sompasauna, a self-run wood-heated sauna on the Helsinki shore, free and open day and night.
- Santa Claus Village. Meeting Santa in his office is free of charge, every day of the year. The photo is what you pay for.
- The forest. Everyman's right lets anyone walk and pick berries on almost any land; the rules are in berry picking and everyman's right.
A day's budget
Per person per day in Helsinki, two people sharing a room where there is one:
| Budget | Mid-range | Comfortable | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | €28 (hostel dorm) | €40 (half an Omena room) | €73 (half a Scandic double) |
| Breakfast | €5 (supermarket) | €5 (supermarket) | €15 (café) |
| Lunch | €9.80 (UniCafe) | €13.70 (lunch buffet) | €13.70 (lunch buffet) |
| Dinner | €10 (supermarket) | €31 (a main and a beer) | €55 (two courses and two drinks) |
| Transport | €10.60 (day ticket) | €10.60 (day ticket) | €10.60 (day ticket) |
| Doing things | €0 (Suomenlinna, a free sauna) | €29 (Löyly) | €62 (24-hour Helsinki Card) |
| Total | about €65 | about €130 | about €230 |
| In dollars / pounds | $74 / £56 | $148 / £112 | $262 / £197 |
The café breakfast is our estimate, not a quoted price; everything else comes from the tables above. In Rovaniemi the budget and mid-range days cost about the same as in Helsinki in October. In December, add the hotel at four times the price and a husky ride, and a comfortable day passes €400.
